Shannon was home when the mail came that Saturday, and she waved to the postal carrier through the window. Then, she practically danced out to the mailbox. Something told her this would be the day she’d hear if the performing arts high school had accepted her. Shannon wanted to sing and dance more than anything, and this school could be the answer to her dreams. She opened the latch of the old metal mailbox and pulled out the contents. There, right on top, was an envelope addressed to Shannon Brown. She tore it open, her heart pounding, and scanned the first lines: “Dear Shannon, we are d

Crying Is Beneficial; Or Is It? by C. Vesely Over the last several years, researchers have collected a lot of data about crying. Studies show that crying has some benefits. Dr. Oren Hasson, a professor at Tel Aviv University, studied crying and concluded that crying creates a stronger bond between the crier and the comforter. This conclusion is supported by Attachment Theory. Attachment Theory states that infants and children cry in order to get their needs met. When a caregiver responds by meeting the crying child's needs, a bond is formed. Although crying may promote healthy bonds between infants and caregivers, it is not beneficial or healthy in every situation. Bawling at every little thing that goes wrong is unhealthy. For example, scheming young children quickly learn that shedding some tears and making fussing noises can twist and turn mom and dad to give them a cookie or allow them to skip a bath. They begin to use crying as a way to manipulate those around them. Even calculating adults use blubbering as a way to control people in order to get their way. Hardened criminals will easily shed crocodile tears in front of judges and juries in an effort to convince people that they are innocent. Another instance in which crying is not beneficial or healthy is in front of unsympathetic, or uncaring, viewers. When a person feels so helpless, sad, or frustrated that he or she cries in front of others, the crier becomes very vulnerable, or defenseless. When no one comforts the crier, the crier ends up feeling worse than before. He or she feels as if no one cares about his or her feelings or problems. Next time, a person feels like boo-hooing, he or she should think twice. First of all, the potential crybaby should think about whether or not he or she has an honest reason to cry. If the person wants to cry in order to get his or her own way, he or she should find a more truthful and responsible way to achieve this goal. Secondly, a person who is on the brink of tears should consider if those around him or her have the emotional capacity and social skills to offer comfort. If not, the sorry individual should wait until he or she is behind closed doors or in the company of a caring friend before letting the torrent of tears loose. 3. Based on the passage, what does manipulate mean? to use your hands to make adjustments to the body to use or handle in a process or performance to change in order to reach an advantage to skillfully influence someone in an unfair manner

Outside, an early spring rain tapped a pleasing rhythm on the window pane while Elizabeth nestled in her favorite easy chair by the fireplace. The hearth was stone cold, as it hadn’t been used in months, but it still comforted her just to sit near it. As the sun dipped lower in the sky, the light within the room grew dim, and Elizabeth reached up to turn on her reading lamp. The mystery novel she’d been reading was a gripping tale of dastardly capers. It was so engrossing that the day had passed almost without her notice. Coming to the end of a chapter, she closed the book and stared straight ahead. Gradually, she became aware of the refrigerator’s hum and the ticking of the wall clock, the gentle sounds she could always count on, like good friends. 4. Read this sentence from the passage above. Coming to the end of a chapter, she closed the book and stared straight ahead. How could the sentence best be rewritten to convey that Elizabeth is feeling content? Coming to the end of a chapter, she laid her head against the chair back and sighed dreamily. The book had her on the edge of her seat, and she let out a gasp as she finished the chapter. Elizabeth drummed her fingers on the arm of the chair, wishing the action in the book would pick up a bit. As she finished the chapter, her heart pounded as she wondered what would happen next.
