What are the requirements necessary for becoming a citizen?
The United States has two main paths to citizenship: 1. Birth 2. Naturalization Most people born in the United States are automatically U.S. citizens. They are native to the United States. Those who immigrate to the United States may become citizens through the naturalization process. The U.S. government makes the rules for this process. It contains many steps. Completing the process may take months or even years.
The Two Paths to U.S. Citizenship Naturalization at least 18 years old legal, permanent U.S. resident for at least five years (or three years if married to someone who has been a U.S. citizen for at least three years) good moral character can read, write, and speak basic English can answer questions about U.S. government and history willing to swear the Oath of Allegiance Birth born in the United States and/or born to at least one parent who maintains legal U.S. citizenship
Basically, the requirements for naturalization are that you have to be 18 or older, a legal resident for 5+ years, good moral values, can read write, and speak english, knows about U.S. government and history, and be willing to swear the Oath of Allegiance.
