OpenStudy (dtan5457):

How would you get this solution? (Two answers)

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

Multiplying by the conjugate and I got 3, but apparently 1 is also an answer choice, what would you do to get that answer?

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

i did, and got 3 which is also a correct answer

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

yes 3 is right

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

yes but one is also right i just want to know how they did that

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

when you multiply times \(\large\color{black}{ 5+\sqrt{13} }\): on top you get: \(\large\color{black}{ 4(5+\sqrt{13} ) }\) on bottom you get: \(\large\color{black}{ (5-\sqrt{13} )(5+\sqrt{13} ) }\) \(\large\color{black}{ 25-13 }\) \(\large\color{black}{ 12 }\) So you have: \(\large\color{black}{ \frac{\LARGE 4(5+\sqrt{13} ) }{\LARGE 12} }\) which is same as \(\large\color{black}{ \frac{\LARGE 5+\sqrt{13} }{\LARGE 3} }\)

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

3 is right

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

what about #1?

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

answer key says its right too

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

2 answers, 1 and 3, i know how it gets to three but not 1

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

that's my question

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

in number 1 they multiply times \(\large\color{black}{ \sqrt{13} }\) on top and bottom

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

ohh...i see it now. thanks

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
