The triangle inequality theorem is needed: One side of a triangle is shorter than the sum of the lengths of the other two.

So, you ask yourself: Is 7 < 9 + 12 ? 9< 7 + 12 ? 12 < 7 + 9 If you get three yeses, then YES, these could be the sides of a triangle. If you get just one NO, then these lengths cannot be the sides of a triangle.
