Which term describes the chromosomal abnormality of having three copies of a single chromosome?
In general the abnormality of having more than two copies of a single chromosome is called as polyploidy. Now if there are three copies we say it is a trisomy.
I would point out that it is not an "abnormality" in all species.
Hi mrdoldum. Why you say that it is not an "abnormality" in all species? Have this a conscionable reason or that is your idea? can you explain please?
@Einabadi88, Neither. The view that having more than a diploid chromosome count is abnormal is a very limited concept of genetics. Trees are frequently 3n, 4n, 8n, etc, and many fungi are not only 2n or 3n or 1n, but also have more than one nuclei per cell. So in some fungi there may be a 1n nucleus and a 2n or 3n nucleus in one cell. This is why I say that 3n is not abnormal in all species.
