Which of the following ordered pairs represents the solution to the system given below? 2x + y = 20 4x − 2y = 40
A (10, 0) B (0, 10) C(4, 2) D (10, −10)
there are 4 different ways to solve simultaneous equations. for this one let's use elimination. the idea is ti make the coefficients of one variable be equal and opposite so they will cancel out then you get one equation with one variable when added. after solving for this variable substitute in either of the original to find the value of the other variable.
first divide equation 2 by 2 just to work with smaller numbers. add the new equation to the first. the y's will cancel out . 4x = 40 so x = 10 from equation 1 2x + y = 20 and x = 10 so replace x with 10 and find y
