Hey guys, quick question! Q: What do you think are the negative impacts of social media on education? It's for my communication studies IA and I would appreciate the help. Thank you so much in advance :D
Students being on, or thinking about social media during class. Bullying can also effect grades to the point where the student skips school/a particular class.
There are also problems that have been shown where people develop online communication skills at the expense of interpersonal ones.
Students spending lot of time on social networking are less able to effectively communicate in person and also social networking sites are not an proper replacement for face-to-face communication.
Another reason social media negatively impacts education is that people tend to be more lax when they are writing, and in turn, grammar gets worse. Then they rely on spell-check to correct things, and not actually learning to spell the words they had difficulty with.
how is "Then they rely on spell-check to correct things, and not actually learning to spell the words they had difficulty with." related to solcial media?
@e.mccormick--Here is the study that was done on it: http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2010/nov/22/internet-encourages-bad-spelling-children
/sigh A little bad reporting there. Let me explain. That is not a study. That is an article about a study. I bet the study also looked at the earlier studies related to the topic. First, there was texting doing this, especially when you had to press each number several times to get a letter. Second came the Graffiti input method for Palm Pilot that was so wide spread it actually caused a drop in penmanship! These are not problems specific to social medial, but rather to the web, email, texting, and other electronic communications. Also, a bigger problem with spelling is one of the little bits you brought up: spell check. There is no spell check on social media. There is, however, spell check on word processors and on web browsers. But, the article you quote as a source does not actually bring that up. All it says is that people do not feel confident in writing things without these tools.
Great points @e.mccormick (and well taken)
