First Q

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why are the de Medici associated with the beginning of the Renaissance in Florence? As staunch supporters of the Catholic Church, they fought against much of the humanist tendencies of the Renaissance. They used their banking wealth and political power to foster art and architecture in the Republic of Florence. Establishing a monarchy based in Florence, they sheltered artists and scholars who fled Papal authority. The de Medici family was the family in power at the Renaissance and were patrons of the arts.

The Medici family is noteworthy for having been patrons of the Renaisssance. It was responsible for the commissioning of many artists and artisans associated with the Renaissance. Under its unusually tolerant rule, the city of Florence, which at the time was like a city state, is said to have rivalled Athens. The Medici family is said to haved directed the destiny of Florence from the 15th centry until 1737. It exerted the same kind influence over the region of Tuscany from 1569 until the end of its inluence. The rise of the Medici family from obscurity to enormous wealth that of prominent merchants and bankers, is said to have marked the triumph of the capitalist class over that of the guild merchants and artisons. Until 1532, the democratic constitution of Florence, Italy was outwardly upheld, but the Medicis exerted the actual control over the government, (except during the time when members of the family were in exile.), without ever having held any permanent offical postions. Cosimo de Medici, the son of the founder, Giovanni, financed lavish charities and patronnage, but, nevetheless, doubled his own fortune, in spite of his "generosity". He founded the Medici library and the academy for Greek studies. Politically, he managed to keep harmony among the Italian city states. The Medicis exerted an influence over the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church. Lorenzo Medici (1449-1492)entered into war with Pope Sixtus IV. One of the enemies of Lorenzo was Savonorola. The Medicis were active in opposing the Counter-Reformation. Lorenzo's son, Giovanni, later became a pope himself. The Medici family expanded its influence by alligning itself with European royalty. Catherine Medici became queen of France. The cousin of Lorenzo Medici (1492-1519), anmed Giulio, later became Pope Clement VII and took control of Florence. He made his illegitimate son, Ippolito a cardinal in 1531. He continued his rule through Alessandro Medici, duke of Urbino. Later lines of the Medicis became the grand dukes of Tuscany. They were descended from the Lorenzo de' Medici who died in 1540. Under the rule of Cosimo de' Medici, (1579-1574)who was known as a ruthless ruler, Florence reached the height of its political and material power, supported by Pope Pius V. Cosimo had assumed absolute power. His son Francesco established alliances with the Hapsbugs and his daughter Marie de' Medici became queen of France. Cosimo II de' Medici was a patron of Galileo. Ferdinand I de' Medici, brother of Cosimo II, founded the Villa de' Medici and Leghorn. Ferdinand II de' Medici founded the first academy of natural sciences in 1657. The Medici family seems to have been the harbinger of the capitalist system. To the extent that it promoted and enabled the Renaissance, it represents both the desirable and the objectionable elements of the Renaissance and of the capitalist system in general. A leading figure of the Renaissance during the time of the Medici family rule was Nicolo Machiaveli (11469-1527, who wrote 'The Prince' a work which made his name a symbol of political unscrupulousness. Machiavelli is said to have personally preferred a republican type of government. The writer also had made diplomatic missions to France, to the pope and to the emperor and is attributed to having played a leading role in the Florentine republic.
