How do I solve this? General formula for nth term?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

you need to find the 1st term, a, in a geometric sequence you know r = 1/2 and n = 5 and the 5th term is 1/8 so the formula is \[a_{n} = a \times r^{n - 1}\] so using the information \[\frac{1}{8} = a \times (\frac{1}{2})^{5 - 1}\] or \[\frac{1}{8} = a \times (\frac{1}{2})^4\] when you find a, substitute it into the general formula above with r 1/2 and using n

@campbell_st still not quite understanding, what do I need to substitute?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 /2 to the squared root of 4 is what

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.25 or 1/4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then u divide 1/4 by 1/8
