How can Cystic Fibrosis cause problems in Digestive system?
First of all, what is \(\bf Cystic~fibrosis?\) Quoting an excerpt from Nelson's book of paediatrics, `Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited multisystem disorder of children and adults; it is the most common life-limiting recessive genetic trait among white persons. ` Explanation/Elaboration: CF is a a genetic disease of mucus and sweat glands whose inheritance is controlled by a recessive gene. Which systems are affected by this disease? Again quoting an excerpt from Nelson's book of pediatrics, `CF is responsible for most cases of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency in early life and is the major cause of severe chronic lung disease in children. It is also responsible for many cases of salt depletion, nasal polyposis, pansinusitis, rectal prolapse, pancreatic, cholinesterase, and insulin-dependent hyperglycemia. CF may manifest as failure to thrive and, occasionally, as cirrhosis or other forms of hepatic dysfunction.` Elaboration: CF mostly affects lungs, pancreas, liver, intestines, sinuses and sex organs. Due to the disease the mucus becomes thick and sticky and hence clogs the lungs, pancreas etc. How CF effects digestion? By mainly clogging Pancreas due to which small intestine is not able to receive enzymes and hence food is not able to get properly digested. There are other problems too related with cystic fibrosis and digestion. http://www.webmd.com/lung/tc/how-cystic-fibrosis-affects-digestion-and-the-pancreas-topic-overview I think this link may be useful.
