OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is the y-intercept of the function, represented by the table of values below? X= -2,1,2,4,7 y= 15,6,3,-3,-12 POSSIBLE ANSWERS= A) 6 B)9 C)3 D)12

OpenStudy (misty1212):

is it a line?

OpenStudy (misty1212):

lets check

OpenStudy (misty1212):

no doesn't look like one does it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (misty1212):

and you don't know what it is if \(x=0\) but we can guess

OpenStudy (anonymous):

11?

OpenStudy (misty1212):

wait a sec, maybe it is a line!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i honestly have no clue haha

OpenStudy (misty1212):

check it it is a line with slope -3

OpenStudy (misty1212):

if that is not clear, i can show you how i know it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

please

OpenStudy (misty1212):

from -2 to 1 in the x is right 3 the corresponding y values are 15 and 6 which is down 9 right 3, down 9 slope would be \(-\frac{9}{3}=-3\)

OpenStudy (misty1212):

that doesn't make it a line, but then i looked at the next two \((1,6), (2,3)\) from 1 to 2 is right 1 from 6 to 3 is down 3 right 1, down 3, slope is \(-\frac{3}{1}=-3\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so whats the y intercept then? im a little confused haha

OpenStudy (misty1212):

0 is one unit before 1, so we go up three from 6 and get 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 9?

OpenStudy (misty1212):

yes

OpenStudy (misty1212):

equation of this line is \[y=-3x+9\]
