Write an equation and solve. Eight less than 3 times a number is 6 times the number, increased by 10.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You have the numbers 8,3,6,10, and some number that we'll call x. We can start with the word 'is'. 'Is' denotes equal. Write that down. Now, on the left side, we have 8,3, and x. On the right side we have 6,x, and 10. We'll start by translating the left side: "Eight less than 3 times a number." The order of operations says we do the times before plus or minus, so we look at the times part: 3 times a number. This translates to 3*x. Next, we look at the addition/subtraction. We have "eight less than.." so, we translate that to 3*x-8. Now we have:\[3*x-8 =\] We next translate the the right side: "6 times the number, increased by 10." Once again, we do multiplication before addition or subtraction. The multiplication part is: "6 times the number" This translates to 6x. Next we look at the addition/subtraction. " increased by 10" This translates to 6x+10. Combine everything together, and we get:\[3x-8=6x+10\]
