Hey Guys! Can you all please share with me your negative experiences with social media as it relates to your intellectual development? For example, enthralled by social networks to the point where you end up studying less. I really need this info in order to write a short story. Thank you all in advance!
which social media are you referring to?
@Rusty143
fb is really bad for me
Hello Rusty, This is probably a question that I would love to answer. Well, Social Media has always been a center of attraction for almost all the teenagers. Yeah, Social Media is also attracting large amount of public from higher age group too but as a major part, teenagers are the ones being engaged highly in activities related to Social Media. It is no where wrong to engage yourself in getting a bit social, talking to friends, retweeting others tweets, sharing your thoughts with others, knowing your interests, uploading your pics.... but when it gets intense, this affects the person deeply! Am also a teenager, and I've gone through such a phase during which I spent a lot of my time in thinking about my friends, about my status, likes, comments, share...! I will prefer to be specific here, and will use Facebook as my reference for Social Media, as it was the only site I used a lot! Once you get into Facebook, it becomes an addiction (not very soon, it takes a bit time though)! Chatting with your classmates, old friends, relatives, is very common use of Facebook. Sharing your status and asking someone to like your post has been very common practice among my other friends. You know what...? Yesterday, I was going through a site which had shown up "8 Reasons to Deactivate Your Facebook Account" ( http://mashable.com/2013/01/28/reasons-deactivate-facebook/#gallery/reasons-to-deactivate-facebook/520c17de3182972b730000e4) . The site presented some very true reasons for a person to realize that Social Media is not for *everyone*. Many of us don't know how to manage our time with engaging ourselves in Social Media too! We spend our time in checking out the news feed, talking with friends.... Even, this may sound weird but a situation comes when a person talks with his parents on FB too, even though, they are sitting next in the other room! You may disagree with this but it is true when the addiction becomes intense. You just use Facebook at such a level which you're not supposed to do. You tend to think more about your peers instead of thinking about yourself and your own ones (parents, siblings). You get angry in small arguments with your elders, you tend to ignore your own ones and try to direct more towards your friends, negative thoughts affect your positivity, with so many advertisements, news on Facebook - you usually get distracted from your aim! I've noticed a fact very often.... when in School, I tell someone that I've completed XYZ course successfully on edX or any other site, they respond like... "ok" ... while on Facebook, they comment "WOW, congrats!" ... see the difference! Their expressions are becoming virtual. We type : "lol" ... but ever thought that is the person really laughing that much? No, it is generally an expression to make the second person comfortable that his joke didn't go wrong! :D This all generally happens with a teenager, as I'm one and I know what may be the consequences of overuse of Social Media. Even, overuse of anything is harmful! You must limit yourself to an extent but Social Media is one of the greatest addictions that will never get limited, it will just go on and become more intense as the time proceeds! Let me share my own experience with you. I've a friend. He studies in the same class, same school... where I do! We both sit together and I've noticed this a lot... we don't talk that much while in School as compared to that on Facebook! This is a negative impact of Social Media on the behaviour of a teenager. Their behaviour becomes weird! Why only teenagers I've been referring to? Well, teenagers are the ones who are not able to control their emotions and get influenced by their peers or anything very fast! P.S : As the user asked for only "Negative" experiences, so, I've only shared those. Cheers!
i dont have very many negative experiences except for when i got scammed
I am sorry for the inconvenience but this post is not related to OpenStudy Feedback. Please post your question in it's relevant section. Thank you.
@Abhisar The reason why I didn't post this question in it's relevant section was because of the slow feedback. I'm aware there's a social media and communication section but when I posted a question there four days ago, i got absolutely no feedback. I posted this question less than a day ago and I got feedback quickly! This post is very important for me. So I had to.
@mathslover THANK YOU SO MUCH for your feedback! As a teen myself, I tend to spend more time behind a plastic screen which is why I find face to face communication a little challenging for me. But, I'm working on it! It's sad to see that the human element is slowly disappearing :(
@some.random.cool.kid The internet in general (social networks, emails, etc). Whatever you do on the net :)
@Rusty143 In that case you can always tag people in your questions. Also you can reach them through chats. Just post the link of your question in any of the chatboxes but under no circumstance anyone shall post a question to a irrelevant section, that's considered as spamming!
Okay, next time. I posted it in the chatbox before this question was answered and no one seemed to check it out. But I'll definitely try the tagging! Thanks alot!
You'e most welcome \(\huge \ddot \smile\) Keep OpenStudying!
well rusty only bad experience ive had with the net is being scammed.
Rusty, you're welcome! :) And yeah, I understand, it is tough to get over from such an addiction. Try to engage yourself in some other things, like talking to family, taking a bit more time while having meal/dinner with your family and spend some time with Nature! Good Luck!
