Please help, will medal and fan :) Solve the system of equations using the substitution method x+y=20 y=-5x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Samus_Aran

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just did this stuff yesterday and I hated it :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know, it's horrible! Can you figure it out though, I haven't done it for a while so I forgot :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

umm I can try but idk how much help ill be

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you suppose to find X?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but once x is found it is really easy to find the y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you go to K12?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hold on I have to refresh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can give you a link to the K12 book that may help http://k12.kitaboo.com/eBookWs/ebook/maths/maths12/# and its on the substitution method part.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

182 is the page

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What does y equal in the equations above?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-5x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats all i know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Correct. Now we substitute this into the first equation. So it becomes x+ (-5x) = 20 Now solve for x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hey better people at math XP

OpenStudy (mathmate):

\(x+\color{red}{y}=20\) \(\color{red}{y}=\color{green}{-5x}\) therefore \(x+\color{green}{-5x}=20\) solve for x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-4x=20 so x = -5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Bingo

OpenStudy (mathmate):

correct!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright thanks, now the y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=25

OpenStudy (mathmate):

correct! y=-5x=-5(-5)=+25=25
