Solve the equation: -3 2/5 + b = 8 1/5 A. b = 11 3/5 B. b = 4 4/5 C. b= 5 3/5 D. b = 11 1/5

OpenStudy (danjs):

i would multiply everything by 5 first to clear out the fractions

OpenStudy (danjs):

or, just add 3 and 2/5ths to 8 and 1/5th

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I kiddna don't how to I know it's gonna be 17/5 + 41/5 which is 58/10 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@DanJS

OpenStudy (danjs):

since b is already by itself, and the denominators are the same on those mixed numbers, you can just add 3 2/5 to both sides of the equation

OpenStudy (danjs):

b = (8+3) + (1/5 + 2/5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

11 3/5?

OpenStudy (danjs):

yeah, you had the improper fractions above right,... you said "it's gonna be 17/5 + 41/5 which is 58/10 right?" just the 58/10 should still be the same denominator of 58/5 which is the same as 11 3/5

OpenStudy (danjs):

that is right, 11 3/5 or in improper form 58/5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks I got 2 more could you help?

OpenStudy (danjs):

sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):
