Tutorial: Direct Answers
First of all, what is a direct answer? It is in which you answer someone's post giving the straight solution to the problem without any guidance whatsoever. It does nothing to help the person with his question. An example would be "The answer is B." Also, answers included in an explanation are also illegal. This rule applies NOT ONLY in the Mathematics section, but also all of the other homework sections. And as @confluxepic said which I fully agree with, "If it is a multiple choice question, you have to guide the user. But if there are no choices, sometimes you can give an answer with an explanation." Sorry, if I didn't get the exact words because the post in which you said that was deleted. There are a few reactions when you tell someone not to give a direct answer. They either, obey you, ignore you, or deny it. Once you find them doing those last 2 things, you can just click the report button and the moderators will have it under control. Just leave the post calmly and let the moderators take care of it. And an important question "Why can't we give a direct answer?" The answer to that is because the Code of Conduct (CoC) states that you cannot and that it is illegal. In the http://openstudy.com/code-of-conduct it says you must: Give Help, Not Answers - I will encourage and guide those needing help, and not just give them an answer OpenStudy values the Learning process - not the ‘Give you an answer’ process Don’t post only answers - guide the asker to a solution. Have homework problems? We can help you - as long as you are looking to learn how to get your solution (and not just the answer). Don't devalue the question/answer process! Don't provide someone with just the answer - explain the process, and help guide them through understanding the problem. Don't just provide the answer to a problem when someone else is in the middle of helping! But if you want to help, by all means, join in! This information came out of the code of conduct: http://openstudy.com/code-of-conduct You must obey them to avoid suspensions and warnings which could get you removed from OpenStudy forever. Notice carefully what I copy and pasted from the CoC: ...Have homework problems? We can help you - as long as you are looking to learn how to get your solution (and not just the answer). The person that needs help on his question should report the user if he gives him a direct answer. And tell him that he has broken the code of conduct. Usually, he would just get the answer from someone, give him an undeserved medal, and keep receiving direct answers. If you see someone else giving a direct answer, do not avoid the issue. You must take action if you are present at the time that the answer was directly given. I think that we should start an organization on OpenStudy...nothing like OSSF which I do not like at all. It should be an organization which people go into different sections reporting the users which give direct answers. This organization could also relate to other rules in the code of conduct such as spamming and trolling. The people that will join this organization will promise to do what the organization was made for, and that is confronting those that give direct answers and reporting them.
*O* the lawd have mercy.... im not gonna read all that....
@just_one_last_goodbye Could you please delete that first comment and repost it ?
hmm for someone else nu... but for u @Conqueror sure

Nice post! Also, I know you all mean well, but again, as you mentioned the little organization part towards the end, I don't agree with that. The intention of this site is to teach/ learn right, so lets stick with that and not get carried away with it, try not to focus too much on people giving direct answers, sure report it and we'll take of it, that's all it really needs. The other moderatos and I all have ways to deal with such a problem, so I think all you guys really have to do is report, because I personally will deal with them in a matter which I believe will change the behaviour :)! So to summarize, just report and carry on with the day, if you call it once that's fine, but do not keep doing it (in the same post). Keep learning!
Well, with an organization, there would be more people reporting people which helps a lot more.
I can disagree with the whole '...But if there are no choices, sometimes you can give an answer with an explanation.', because users can look straight at the answer and won't even take a look at the explanation you have given, so you are giving them the answer with an explanation they won't look at, so give just your explanation and let the asker read it, and figure out what the answer is. If the asker is on the wrong track, then nudge the asker into the right direction with a hint or link, example, etc etc etc.
No, if it is not multiple choice, then all they are looking for is the explanation. For example, 'What are adjectives ?' To reply to that, you just give a brief explanation of what they are. They need to read the whole phrase in which you gave them to understand what they are.
Well, that isn't a direct answer.. But we do have the non-multiple choice explanations where you can still just give the direct answer, just a different form than that
Idk why I posted that tutorial and Idk why I wasn't instead being like the person on my picture that the Cowboys lost.
really?
explanation + answer on multiple choice question = direct answer explanation + answer on non-multiple choice question = indirect answer
not really.
How so ?
Well, sometimes > explanation + answer on non-multiple choice question = indirect answer
well sometimes it does not.
Because if someone asks, what is 2x - 16 + 4 without any choices, then someone would just throw in the answer.
not always
no actually they would have to solve it. its easier when you work problems out like those.
"According to the Code of Conduct: ''Don’t post only answers - guide the asker to a solution.'' We're supposed to guide the asker to a solution, *not* to give them the full solution. Giving answers to the questions of test/exam is not justified (that's obvious), but even for homework question, we shouldn't just give the asker the answer/full solution. This way, we don't know if the asker really learn something or simply just copy your work. That's not really learning. When you click the About Us page, you'll see this ''Our mission is to make the world one large study group, regardless of school, location, or background.'' Obviously, the aim of this site is to make a study group. I don't understand why you think it is unrealistic. And also, even though there are some users who just give out answer, that doesn't mean that it's justified to do so. When you see others are not doing right, you should report it or simply tell them don't do this, but not following them and make it as an excuse." ~ http://openstudy.com/users/Callisto#/updates/50b1cb83e4b0e906b4a63b09
Too many essays on that post.... o.O
Some guy just gave out a direct answer....
Report him. @Raphaelcbm
Great job.
Nowadays I just post a link. It helps. So if someone asked me what happened in the renaissance I would give them a whole article about it. If somene asked me in which time period a king died in I would give a link to a biography of the king.
