Complete the equation of the linear function. y =____x +____ http://static.k12.com/calms_media/media/1524000_1524500/1524412/1/4ca0974cc0b94f0ca087c628d4c99d7f088b0730/MS_IMC-140901-106145.jpg @freckles

OpenStudy (freckles):

so we need to find the slope and the y-intercept

OpenStudy (freckles):

the y-intercept is easy to find just find what number is being hit on the y-axis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3

OpenStudy (freckles):

on the y-axis?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no wait 1

OpenStudy (freckles):

so we have y=mx+1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do we find the slope?

OpenStudy (freckles):

we can find m by using a point on the line besides the y-intercept point

OpenStudy (freckles):

so do you see any other points on that line

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i just see (2,-3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and (1,-1)

OpenStudy (freckles):

we can use that point for sure (but there are infinitely many points but some points are easier to read then others) we just need one

OpenStudy (freckles):

so (2,-3)

OpenStudy (freckles):

we have the line so far is y=mx+!

OpenStudy (freckles):

y=mx+1

OpenStudy (freckles):

replace x with 2 and y with -3 and solve for m

OpenStudy (freckles):

that is you have -3=m(2)+1

OpenStudy (freckles):

solve that for m

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry to be a bother but how do i do that?

OpenStudy (freckles):

how to solve for m?

OpenStudy (freckles):

-3=2m+1 we want to isolate m first we will need to isolate 2m but to do that we will have to subtract 1 on both sides

OpenStudy (freckles):

can you subtract 1 on both sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-4

OpenStudy (freckles):

so we have -4=2m

OpenStudy (freckles):

so m=-4/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but simplify taht and you get -2

OpenStudy (freckles):

you could have also done this: \[y=\frac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1}x+\text{ y-intercept } \\ y=\frac{-3-1}{2-0}x+1\] yes

OpenStudy (freckles):

I used the points (2,-3) and (0,1) to find the slope this way just using the slope formula (change of y over change of x )

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be y=-2x+1?

OpenStudy (freckles):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks
