Saint Valentine is a widely recognized third-century Roman saint commemorated on February 14 and associated since the High Middle Ages with a tradition of courtly love.
Why do we celebrate Valentine's Day? Every February across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are given to loved ones all in the name of St. Valentine. The history of Valentine's Day is a mystery. February has always been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day contains remains of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. Pope Gelasius declared February 14th, St. Valentine's Day around 498 A.D. In the Middle Ages it was believed in France and England that February 14th was the beginning of birds' mating season; this added to the idea that the middle of February should be a day for romance. Today, the Catholic Church recognizes three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend is said that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families. Therefore, he outlawed marriage for young single men because he felt they were his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine felt that was injustice and he defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. Valentines actions were discovered and Claudius ordered that he be put to death. It is said that Valentine sent the first valentine himself. It is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl while in prison. The young girl may have been the jailer's daughter and she visited him during his confinement. It is also believed that before Valentine's death he wrote a letter to the young girl, which he signed "From your Valentine", an expression that is still used today. Some believe Valentine's Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine's death or burial, which occurred around 270 A.D.
Nothing is reliably known of the martyr who is venerated on February 14 other than his name and that he was buried at a cemetery on the Via Flaminia close to the Milvian bridge to the north of Rome on that day. Because so little is known of him, his name was removed in 1969 from the General Roman Calendar, leaving his liturgical celebration to local calendars. The Catholic Church continues to recognize him as a saint, listing him as such in the February 14 entry in the Roman Martyrology, and authorizing liturgical veneration of him on February 14 in any place where that day is not devoted to some other obligatory celebration in accordance with the rule that on such a day the Mass may be that of any saint listed in the Martyrology for that day. Use of the pre-1970 liturgical calendar is also authorized under the conditions indicated in the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum of 2007. Saint Valentine's Church in Rome, built in 1960 for the needs of the Olympic Village, continues as a modern, well-visited parish church. Saint Valentine's Day, the Feast of Saint Valentine, is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion, as well as in the Lutheran Church. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, Saint Valentine the Presbyter is celebrated on July 6 and Hieromartyr Valentine (Bishop of Interamna, Terni in Italy) is celebrated on July 30. Notwithstanding, because of the relative obscurity of these two saints in the East, members of the Greek Orthodox Church named Valentinos (male) or Valentina (female) may observe their name day on the Western ecclesiastical calendar date of February 14. For many years now we have celebrated Valentine's Day; many of us not knowing how this romantic holiday came about or who it was named after. Valentine's Day is a special day that has been set aside in order to pay honorage to love. On the 14th of February, people send flowers, candy or cards as an expression of their love and appreciation to their lovers, friends or relatives. Yet, few will stop and ponder why this date singled out, or just whom this Valentine fellow was, that he should have a day named after him. Who was Valentine? That question is not easy to answer because depending on which book you may read you may get a different version. You may find one author stating that there were two different men named Valentine whose lives were mixed together to form one legend. Another author may argue two different legends arose about the same man. And yet another author may say that there were three men named Valentine. There are stories, such as these; Valentine was a Roman priest who was martyred during the prosecution of Claudius, the Goth, around AD 269 or 270 and was buried on the Flaminian Way. The second story is, Valentine was a bishop of Terni martyred in Rome. The third is, Valentine helped Christians during a time of persecution. He was caught and put in jail; he became a believer there and was bludgeoned to death for this on February 14th, 269. While in prison he is said to have sent messages to friends saying "Remember your Valentine" and "I love you". It is said in another story that Valentine was a priest that secretly married couples, defying the law of Emperor Claudius, which temporarily forbade marriages. And yet another story said that Valentine was imprisoned for refusing to worship pagan gods. Falling in love with the jailer's daughter, he is said to have cured her through prayer and on the date of execution, February 14th, he had written her a note signed "Your Valentine".
