I was checking a school math book , and found this rule \(\Large \lim _{n \to 1}\frac{x^n-1}{x-1}=n\) but thought it was so wrong to put such rules for students to memorize , i mean its all about deriving things , don't you agree ?

OpenStudy (mathmath333):

such formulas are important in exam where u have less time, where an amateur student can quickly recognize it which saves time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well , i dont think it would take time when a student understand how to make such limits unlike memorizing which might be tough sometimes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i agree to @PHP

OpenStudy (mathmath333):

i said amateur students not every student is good in maths as @Marki

OpenStudy (bibby):

why reward and encourage amateurs and mediocrity?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm, my goal in teaching is to provide a good step for solving to all of my student, idont care how amateurs or how good in math she/he is .

OpenStudy (mathmath333):

thats good ^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they have the right to know , and IMHO i think doing this memorizing stuff keep students away from thinking

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:O

OpenStudy (bibby):

you have to be born in usa first and be 35 :p

OpenStudy (mathmath333):

yes memorizing isnt the solution

OpenStudy (mathmath333):

lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:O lol @bibby

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

you will fail in chemistry if u dont memorize periodic table

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

i memorize (a+b)^2 formula and few trig identities but i know how to derive them hmm

OpenStudy (mathmath333):

haha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not at all, in chemistry they gave u the periodic table ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in exams ...ect

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

they dont give in india

OpenStudy (anonymous):

woah :O so strict

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

i still remember first 30 elements of periodic table in my head and can sing even if u wake me up from sleep and ask..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well even in my regression analysis exams i was given 3 papers for references in exams itself, like t,z,f table + all rules

OpenStudy (mathmath333):

their is a word called \("pattern~recognization"\) in chess. which is altogether different from memorizing.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i memorize the whole table for some reason :3

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

do you memorize alphabets ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omg u guys are all soo geniuses :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hey im not saying about such necessary stuff to memorize , if u check my question u would see what im talking about

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

ikr :) was just trying to maintain a different opinion as this thread is going monotone haha!

OpenStudy (mathmath333):

cool stuff \(\Huge \rightarrow\) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Checkmate_pattern

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm its been long time since i played chess

Nnesha (nnesha):

hmm thats a True story^^^^^^^^^^^ no periodic table n Asian counttries :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why not i'll see :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i live in Asia :O

Nnesha (nnesha):

bec WE ARE VERYYYY INTELLIGENT :P:D:P:D:P:D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not at all ... i completly disagree xD

OpenStudy (mathmath333):

very funny answer there

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

ending the game with rook is fast compared to queen

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm

OpenStudy (mathmath333):

no! \(\huge \uparrow\) the queen is the most powerful piece

OpenStudy (mathmath333):

and it ends game fast than rook

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lets play chess

OpenStudy (mathmath333):

chess is a math problem

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

nope, with queen you need to be careful that game doesnt become draw because of not leaving an opponent with a step to move

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i thought its algorithm

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

thats the reason end game with queen takes more steps compared to rook

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

it is a draw when opponent has nowhere to go without a check

OpenStudy (mathmath333):

thats a different thinng called the \(stalemate\), if in high level chess u have a queen vs rook , the side with the queen wins most likey ,

OpenStudy (mathmath333):

yes the stalemate is the last chance to save the game and is very useful trick!!

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

right, that only happens in amatuer games.. the professional players usually resign right after losing a piece. most games don't go till checkmate step

OpenStudy (mathmath333):

here is funny stalemate, where the black had every thing win tobut the game was drawn, http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1255706

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

next move is black ?

OpenStudy (mathmath333):

the last move was white's move but he had nowhere to go so stalemate

OpenStudy (mathmath333):

click this button for last phase \(\huge >>\)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

thats hilarious lol looks he is rushing to convert his 3 pawns as queens and forgot the position of white king! i pity black haha

OpenStudy (mathmath333):

yes thats embarrassing haha!

OpenStudy (mathmath333):

even the world champions have falled in that trap

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

James Adams Congdon vs Eugene Delmar 5th American Chess Congress (1880) · Spanish Game: Bird Variation (C61) · 1/2-1/2

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

that draw is only because of carelessness

OpenStudy (mathmath333):

here is another game where whits is non other than the immotal garry kasparove , he was world no 1 for i think 10 or more years and he falls in the trap http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1258478

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

lol what a blunder ! xD

OpenStudy (mathmath333):
