Pls help! I can't think! Hershey and chase used the 35s isotope to label proteins. How does this isotope differ from the 32s isotope found in the greatest natural abundance a and why did they choose 35 instead of 32? Pls help i have a concussion and really can't think straight lol.

OpenStudy (kainui):

Well, what's an isotope?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Multiple forms of an element with the same number of protons

OpenStudy (kainui):

True, but that doesn't quite say what an isotope is. What I mean is, all Sulfur atoms have the same number of protons. You'll never find a Sulfur atom without 16 protons, otherwise it's not Sulfur, if you said you had a Sulfur atom with 17protons I'd say you really have Chlorine! So maybe specify what you mean when you say "multiple forms".

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Like more than one of the same element I guess... My memory is really fuzzy though sorry

OpenStudy (kainui):

Here this might help, where are are neutrons found and where are electrons found?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Neutrons are in the nucleus and electrons are like surrounding the cell, right?

OpenStudy (kainui):

Yeah, for the most part. Electrons are kind of like free agents whizzing around between different atoms and are easily exchanged, that's why we have electricity, the current that flows in wire is exactly these electrons, that's why they are pretty much the same word "electron" and "electricity". Since electrons aren't really part of the atom itself and protons are what define the atom's identity, then all we have left are the neutrons. We can change the number of them and that changes the isotope of the atom. So that answers the first part of the question. The second part of the question is kind of hard to answer since I'm not sure what kind of answer you're looking for, what class is this, in highschool or college?

Hello? :(

pooja195 (pooja195):

ok what dont you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I forgot all of this... And I can't remember the stuff I did remember if that makes any sense :)

pooja195 (pooja195):

hmm well do you understand anything of what kainui said?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, a bit

pooja195 (pooja195):

ok so what would u still need help on?

pooja195 (pooja195):

be specific :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just don't know the answer to the question... If you could pls explain the whole thing that would be really helpful. Sorry for my confusion lol I hit my head really hard😌

pooja195 (pooja195):

ok lol :) i'll be glad to hold up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you so much:)

pooja195 (pooja195):

no problem :D
