Please Explain: Solve for x: 4 − (x + 2) < −3(x + 4)

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

please try to distribute the signs into the parentheses

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

hint: solve this equivalent inequality: \[4-x-2<-3x-12\]

OpenStudy (triciaal):

to get rid of parenthesis multiply each term inside by what is outside. when you don't see the number 1 is understood isolate the variable to one side of the equation or inequality and the numbers to the other. whatever you do to one side also do to the other to maintain the balance, you do not want to change the value simplify divide by the coefficient of the variable

OpenStudy (triciaal):

post what you have and I will check it

You can solve this similarly to a normal equation: 4 - x - 2 < -3x - 12 2 - x < -3x - 12 -x < -3x - 14 2x < -14 x < ? .... this is your final answer :) This means that any number less than ? will satisfy the inequality.
