He basically set the ball rolling on what would become the US' involvement in the Vietnam War. It was under his watch that the number of American military advisors escalated in order to counter the Communists, which he had believed in fighting, but had also emphasized that this was "their" (the Vietnamese) war and that they had to win it. However, Kennedy was assassinated a few weeks after a military coup had toppled South Vietnamese President, Diem, (who was pretty unpopular), and LBJ inherited what was started.
