The Republic of Texas existed from 1836 to 1845 before Texas joined the United States. Besides the likelihood of war with Mexico, why did annexation take so long?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hold on a sec....I need to think a bit...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Texas practiced slavery, and the US already had adequate problems maintaing a balance between the north and the south on that issue. Texas had made an effort to go it alone as a Republic, but it lacked recognition by most of the world and had created an enormous burden of debt. Texas needed a handout in a big way.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

soo bc they were a slave state?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

pretty much

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can't do this one without at least the question choices, they are asking you for a specific answer choice that isn't listed here.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hold on let me get a hold of someone to ask them if they found the answer choices

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok let me know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, These amendments split the country, with only Southern states obeying the amendments by making African Americans totally equal. These amendments were virtually ignored in the South and did not contribute to the equal status of blacks until the middle of the 20th century. These amendments were effective tools that allowed black Southern citizens to integrate into the industrial economy of the late 1800s. These amendments improved the lives of most African Americans in the South during the post-Reconstruction Era by providing land to former slaves.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

B I believe

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What does this quote say about Lincoln's feelings about the South's discontent?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let me find the quote

OpenStudy (anonymous):

All profess to be content in the Union if all constitutional rights can be maintained. Is it true, then, that any right plainly written in the Constitution has been denied? I think not. Happily, the human mind is so constituted that no party can reach to the audacity of doing this. Think, if you can, of a single instance in which a plainly written provision of the Constitution has ever been denied. If by the mere force of numbers a majority should deprive a minority of any clearly written constitutional right, it might in a moral point of view justify revolution; certainly would if such right were a vital one. But such is not our case.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it means that no one is to force some one to do something i think

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the rights only included the northern states but, not the southern states which means that they shouldn't complain right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you think? @musicmakeslife

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The South says that they will join the union when the constitution is properly followed. Lincoln's response to this is that the Constitution is in fact being followed more accurately then the South thinks, since by abolishing slavery, it allows a minority to have just as much constitutional rights as a majority. Lincoln shows he doesn't agree with the South and wishes to follow the Constitution in a better way then they did by not leaving anyone out. This is the right answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

read my last message! whould that be accurate ? @musicmakeslife

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No I would go with what I just explained.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea, like @musicmakeshift said

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry, i did your name wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay . but my friend sent me the 4 explanations so let me upload them through message

OpenStudy (anonymous):

He felt that the people of the South had not been denied any of their Constitutional rights. He was more concerned with building the economy of the North than dealing with the South's discontent. He felt that since the Constitution did not apply to the Southern states, they shouldn't complain about their rights. He felt that the people of the South had been denied many of their Constitutional rights.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh lol well I thought it was like an essay format, next time please include the choices. I have to go soon but the answer is A.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):
