Federal judges are appointed for life. Congress cannot remove them unless they violate a law (which almost never happens). Congress cannot restrict a judge or even lower his or her salary. Why are judge's given this job security?
a. Because in the Constitution judges are seen as superior to all other government officials. b. This was a tradition from colonial times that was kept in place because the colonists respected judges highly. c. The framers felt that it be essential for judge's to be independent of outside influence so that they may make decisions based purely on the law without fear of retribution from Congressmen, Presidents or anyone else who may disagree with their decision. d. This insured that judges would be men (and now women) of wealth who could make fair decisions without worrying about the need for other employment, which might distract them from their duties.
I'd say C. Judges do have to make very well decisions when judging a trial. They can't be biased or have any influence that would distract them from doing their job correctly.
