Story: The dawn light whispered through the glass window. In the corner of each window, the coldness of the morning had cast a slight haze, which acted as a prism reflecting the light in a dull hue. Patrick hadn't been sitting for long—his seat was still cold. He settled his bag beneath his seat and turned to gaze out the glass. The dark, overcast sky draped everything in a gray veil. Even his mother, who wore a turquoise overcoat, couldn't escape the dreariness of the pallid morning. He watched her wave and noticed she feigned a slight smile, though he was sure she was concealing teary eyes behind her dark sunglasses. Months ago, after he had turned 22, he chose to join the Army, and she had resisted his decision. 2 Seeing her waving outside the bus ignited his mind with thoughts and reminiscences of what seemed like a distant time, almost a different life altogether. Through a fog of memory, he recalled his first day riding the bus to school. It had been late summer, although autumn could already be felt in the air with crisper, shorter days. When the bus stopped, he recalled gazing into the opening jaws of the yellow mammoth creature. After awkwardly climbing the mountainous stairs, he stared down the long aisle where the children peered up at him. About halfway down the aisle, he spotted an empty seat and scampered over to it. He glanced out the window nervously. There, standing tall and proud, was his mother. He could see her scanning the windows of the bus and looking for him. When her eyes settled on him, she lit up. She held her hand up high and waved excitedly. 3 "Have a good day," she called out. "I will see you this afternoon!" Seeing and hearing her made him calm and joyful—he smiled and waved back. 4 Suddenly, Patrick felt the bus start as his seat began to rumble beneath him, shaking him out of his reverie. Thinking of that first day on the school bus, he held his hand up and smiled, waving to his mother outside. She waved once again, and he thought a faint smile lifted her face. However, something was different about her now. Here they were, exchanging good-byes at a bus stop, but it was not the same as that distant memory. Perhaps it was because they were both older. She stood torpidly as if weary and tired from years of worry. The sight made him feel melancholic. Patrick already knew that leaving home was not easy, but that wisdom didn't make good-bye any easier. 5 The Sun broke through the clouds now, and shards of blue could be seen in the mid-morning sky. The window was now clear and warm from the sunlight. Patrick rested his head against the window and let the light strike his face. Outside the bus, a blurry watercolor of trees splashed on the canvas of the sky. 6 A billboard raced by, and Patrick saw two young men pictured as friends in an advertisement. He suddenly remembered his next-door neighbor, Tony. They had been in the same classes, played the same sports, and even had similar life plans. They used to climb trees in the woods, and Tony would talk about becoming a musician someday. Patrick usually talked about becoming a baseball player. Of course, their lives didn't pan out that way. The last Patrick had heard, Tony had received a jail sentence for stealing a car. That was three years ago. Thinking of Tony and himself reminded Patrick of a poem he had read in high school. It was the poem "To a Mouse" by Robert Burns. Right now, a few lines rang in his thoughts: "The best laid schemes of mice and men / Go often awry, / And leave us nothing but grief and pain, / For promised joy!" 7 Patrick felt the hours pass by, and the day began to brighten. Soon, he would arrive at the Army base where his training would begin. He wasn't sure what lay ahead, but he knew one thing: his life would not be the same. Something about that idea made Patrick feel excited for the future, yet he couldn't help but feel a sense of loss as well. It was as if the life he knew was eroding away in the wake of the bus. Nevertheless, deep down, Patrick felt he was doing the right thing. Perhaps this is the feeling of growing older and becoming a man, Patrick thought to himself as the bus thundered down the road and towards his future.

I'm getting the sense that the main idea would be something to do with not knowing the future, but knowing that things will change. I'm pretty sure I'm wrong though :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):
