total area= area of bigger square + area of smaller square

OpenStudy (anonymous):

40 + 9 = 49

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let x be the dimension of bigger square, which is equal to 5 let y be dimensions of smaller square, which is equal to 3 \(\sf x^2 +y^2= 5^2 +3^2\) the dimensions of the bigger is 5 x 5 not 5 x 8, because 8 ft includes the side of the smaller one.

34 ft2!

Thanks again! @Data_LG2
