The Apple II was not a PC-Clone. The CPU, MOS 6502, which was also used in the first Nintendo, Atari and Commodore 64, was developed by the same engineers that the Motorola Chip 6811, a chip that was very popular due to its ease of programming and available analog pins. The PC-Clones were modeled on the Intel-based microprocessors and varied significantly from the Apple II systems that were RISC-based, while PC-Clones were not. The 6502 used little endian, while pc-based systems were big endian. Apple II systems were engineered from hardware to software as a unit, same company. PC-based systems were engineered with hardware developed by one company and software (mainly Microsoft) developed by another.
