Directrix (directrix):

First, we need to know what a chord of a circle is.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the line segment joining two points on a curve.

Directrix (directrix):

Good. A line segment on the interior of a circle. A chord has both endpoints on the circle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im thinking that its BC cause its the only straight line but do diagonal lines count

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and when i say straight i mean like straight down

Directrix (directrix):

Any segment with its endpoints on the circle counts. It does not matter whether the segment is going up, down, or to the side.

Directrix (directrix):

Does segment OA have both endpoints on the circle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

By end points do you mean going straight across both sides of the circle? or can it stop in the middle where O is?

Directrix (directrix):

Look at the attachment. I outlined segment OA in blue. Is O a point on the circle? Is A a point on the circle. By "on the circle" I mean the ring of points which make the circle. Not the interior of the circle.

Directrix (directrix):

A is on the circle. O is not. So, segment AO is not a chord. |dw:1422043442027:dw|
