A van will drive ten miles north, 15 miles south, and then five miles north again. The van gets 33 miles per gallon, and there is one gallon of gas left in the tank. Compute the relative distance and the total distance. Then decide if there is enough fuel for the trip.

You add all of the miles together, the direction doesn't really matter. So 10 + 15 + 5 = 30. Since the van gets 33 miles per gallon and there is only one gallon left in the tank 33 x 1 = 33. So 30 - 33 = 3. Since the answer turned out to be positive not negative you have 3 gallons of gas left in the tank after you make the trip. Meaning, there is enough fuel for the trip.
