the diagram shows three points: a=(-1,5) B (2,-1) and c=(0,5) a line L is parallel to ab and passes through c. find the equation of L @Godlovesme

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so how would i start

OpenStudy (godlovesme):

do u know how to find slope?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y-y1 over x-x1

OpenStudy (godlovesme):

yea so can u find the slope for line ab ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5--1 over -1-2 = 6/-3 = -2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that correct

OpenStudy (godlovesme):

wait i'm checking

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok sorry

OpenStudy (godlovesme):

it's fine :) and yes u r right @musty123 so we have found the slope now it says the line should pass through point c(0,5)

OpenStudy (godlovesme):

parallel lines have the same slope so the eqn we will create should have a slope of -2 r u familiar with the point-slope form?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y-y1=m(x-x1)

OpenStudy (godlovesme):

omg :O u r awesome!! so when we plug the info we have we get y-5= -2(x-0) can u solve for y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y-5=-2(x-0) y-5=-2x y=3x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=-3x

OpenStudy (godlovesme):

did u add -2x+5 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=3x

OpenStudy (godlovesme):

umm r those like terms? i mean -2x has a variable and the other one is just a number:/ besides our slope MUST be -2 since the lines r parallel the slopes should be the same

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im nt sure

OpenStudy (godlovesme):

|dw:1422140380011:dw| is that confusing?
