OpenStudy (firejay5):

What does the phrase, "Who With A Single Thwart Blow Cleft Asunder A Brace of Hulking Blustering Giants" mean?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

You tell me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can't tell you the answer straight out, but I can help you find it.

OpenStudy (firejay5):

Well just as long as you help and not tell me to "you tell me" or "I don't know you figure it out".

OpenStudy (abb0t):

I don't understand how difficult this is. It's YOUR OWN interpretation of this quote. C'mon!! Quit being lazy!!

OpenStudy (firejay5):

anyway @Catseyeglint911 thanks for helping me!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Some people have a difficult time translating things or interpreting meaning out of them. That's why there is a place like openstudy for us to help them. @abb0t

OpenStudy (abb0t):

@Catseyeglint911 I understand that, but there is also no reason whatsoever that they cannot tell us what they think first so that we can help them in the right direction. Simply asking and begging (which he does often) is not help.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well if you would like him to tell you what he thinks you could ask him. Firejay, what is your interpretation of this? I understand that is what you meant initially with "You tell me" but it does come across as though you just want him to do it himself and provide no assistance. Better wording would be good that's all.

OpenStudy (firejay5):

See thank you @Catseyeglint911 you've clearly proven my point, when I post questions I am not wanting the answer, I need help in trying to get to the answer myself. Anyone who tells me that I am being lazy or you figure it out on your own or tells me that I don't offer any help is just plain mean. SOME PEOPLE don't know what that person does behind the computer screen, so stop and think before you type something hurtful and mean, because tbh it's not getting me nowhere if we aren't working as a team to solve the problem/situation.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

I have seen firejay many times asking for answers in exchange for medals, asking for complete work to be shown @Catseyeglint911 This is nothing new.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

It's time he learn to think critically on his own prior to being given the help he wants and deserves to get.

I am quite new to the English side of Openstudy as far as answering goes, so I am not aware of anyone's past actions no matter what they are. Also, I assure you I will help him reach an answer, not give it to him.

Onward with the question. Okay so, "Who With A Single Thwart Blow Cleft Asunder A Brace of Hulking Blustering Giants" First let's define some of these words. That will help tremendously. ~ Thwart: because it is being used as a noun here the definition would be ' structural crosspiece sometimes forming a seat for a rower in a boat ~ Cleft: split, divided, or partially divided into two ~ Asunder: split or divided into pieces ~ Brace: a pair of something, typically of birds or mammals killed in hunting. ~ Hulking: large, heavy, or clumsy. ~ Blustering: talk in a loud, aggressive, or indignant way with little effect.

OpenStudy (firejay5):

hahahaha btw @abb0t see again you don't know what the other person does behind the computer screen hahahaha!!! :D I broken down the phrase from words I don't know well: thwart - prevent someone from accomplishing something cleft - split, divided, or partially divided into two asunder - apart; divide into pieces hulking - a person or object that's large, heavy, or clumsy blustering - talking in a loud, aggressive, or indignant way with little effort I am guessing the phrase means based on the definition is this: A person who stops someones blow will divide into pieces and cause the giants to be angry and talk loud. *I am not for sure but I took a swing at it.*

@abb0t That's what I do.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Exactly, if @Catseyeglint911 anyone can do it. Learn from this firejay!

OpenStudy (firejay5):

well I am trying to figure out the best way to explain this phrase into a good explanation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Who With A Single Thwart Blow Cleft Asunder A Brace of Hulking Blustering Giants Well Hulking and Blustering is describing the giants, not necessarily saying how they react, so more like 'large obnoxious giants' May I ask what source this is from?

OpenStudy (firejay5):

what you mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

~ Thwart: because it is being used as a noun here the definition would be ' structural crosspiece sometimes forming a seat for a rower in a boat ~ Cleft: split, divided, or partially divided into two ~ Asunder: split or divided into pieces ~ Brace: a pair of something, typically of birds or mammals killed in hunting. ~ Hulking: large, heavy, or clumsy. ~ Blustering: talk in a loud, aggressive, or indignant way with little effect. I'm just going to fill in the quote with our defintions, and we'll see how that goes.. Who With A Single (prevention) Blow (cleft and asunder both mean about the same thing "split or divide") A (pair) of (large, heavy) (obnoxious, agressive) Giants

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Why don't you let him give you some feedback?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That is what I am now asking for.

OpenStudy (firejay5):

a person who stops a blow won't split the large giants

OpenStudy (firejay5):

a person who tries to hit the giants will effect how they behave

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So with this... Who With A Single (prevention) Blow (cleft and asunder both mean about the same thing "split or divide") A (pair) of (large, heavy) (obnoxious, aggressive) Giants I myself am not entirely sure of the translation, but this is what I get... It seems to me like either he is fighting with these giants and successfully blocking their attacks, so like he's able to take on a pair of giants and stand his ground. (which is impressive)

OpenStudy (firejay5):

that's not what I was thinking at all, but it's way a better than my interpretation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright so based off of what you think, try and write a new interpretation in your own words.
