I have a philosophical question right here. I wonder if it is correct to say infinity = infinity?
infinity is a direction, it is not a discrete amount.
if we try to use it as some distinct value then: infinity + 1 = infinity is a true and a false statement.
How about when we say x goes to infinity, isn't x goes to infinity as a quantity? Or we define infinity as some kind of pointer like in computers, adresses to x's amount at that point in that direction?
By the way, do you remember me? It have been years since I asked a question here and see you answering it.
youre familiar to me :) as x gets larger and larger, it grows beyond bound ... it approaches infinity.
in certain math courses, infinity can be given a specific definition so that you could possibly say infinity = infinity .... but its the courses definition on how they are using the term that matters most.
Ok, that is helpful. It is, in some way, about what our choice of reference frame and perspective then,... Do you know any book that I can read on the subject or one that touches the subject at some part of it?
not sure if i know of any books perse. a title comes to mind, but how relevant it is i wouldnt know. the man who knew infinity ... its a biography on ramanujan i believe.
if memory serves, cantor played with the semantics of infinity when he was trying to develop has theory on countable/uncountable sets.
Just found it!! Thanks.
