How might European interest in exploration have increased as a result of the Crusades?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, what happened during the crusades?

One of the things could be is actually comes from the establishing of lending institutions across the continent. The soldiers traveled with the different resources they actually have. The church actually had raised more taxes, and people had trouble paying these costs.

i think the crusades might have spurred interest in exploration simply because the europeans voyaged across exotic new lands and came back with jewels and gold and loot beyond compare. it certainly inspired them to seek out new continents and conquer them in the name of religion

One thing to remember about the Crusades is that the Muslims that ruled the Middle East essentially straddled the lucrative trade routes (such as the Silk Road) from the Far East (such as from India and China). Goods still came through, Venetian merchants made a hefty profit from dealing with Arab traders, but the markup on goods was something that most European merchants would have preferred not to deal with. Whoever had the best trade routes often dictated both supply and price. It's what eventually prompted explorers in later centuries like the Portuguese and Christopher Columbus to go on their journeys to find new routes to far off ports when the land routes were either far too dangerous, closed to European traders by belligerent powers, or too expensive to deal with.
