HELP FOR MEDAL!!! Today’s temperature in Barrow, Alaska, and the high temperatures for the next two days are consecutive integers whose sum is -87. Write an equation and solve it step-by-step using transformations to find the three temperatures.

OpenStudy (misty1212):

HUI!!!

OpenStudy (misty1212):

do you know what "consecutive" means in this context?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah it means integers that follow each other in order like 1,2,3...

OpenStudy (misty1212):

yeah but in this case since they add to \(-87\) the they have to be negative, like \[-23,-22,-21\]

OpenStudy (misty1212):

we can get it right away by experimenting to see what works i know that is not what your math teacher wants you do to, but it will only take a second then we can come up with some stupid equation to solve lets guess \[-28-27-26\]

OpenStudy (misty1212):

nope not enough, how about \[-30-29-28\]?

OpenStudy (misty1212):

whew got it on the second try !!!

OpenStudy (misty1212):

now we can do it the math teacher way \[n+n+1+n+2=-87\] solve for \(n\)

OpenStudy (misty1212):

combine like terms get \[3n+3=-87\\ 3n=-90\] etc

OpenStudy (misty1212):

didn't really need the equation, but you still get \(n=-30\) like we already knew!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wow thank you so much @misty1212 algebra seemed really fun when you helped me lol thanks

OpenStudy (misty1212):

\[\color\magenta\heartsuit\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the threee temperatures are -87, -90, and -30 @misty1212?

OpenStudy (misty1212):

oh no dear, the three temperatures are here \[-30-29-28\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh right i forgot sorry

OpenStudy (misty1212):

the consecutive numbers are \[-30,-29,-28\] and when you add them you get \(-87\) if my arithmetic is correct
