Factor x^2 - 36. Show your work.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@abb0t

OpenStudy (one098):

Have you tried to find it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah, and here are all the possibillities: 1 x 36 = 36 2 x 18 = 36 3 x 12 = 36 4 x 9 = 36 6 x 6 = 36 9 x 4 = 36 12 x 3 = 36 18 x 2 = 36 36 x 1 = 36

OpenStudy (anonymous):

all those put into (x+y)(x+y)

OpenStudy (one098):

\[x^{2}-36\] And yes, however its negative 36. \[(x-6)(x+6)\] Could this work?

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

perfect square formula X___X

OpenStudy (anonymous):

all those put into (x+y)(x+y)

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

hey! it's (x-a)(x+b) where a,b=numbers Let a,b = 6

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

think of it this way .. what's 6^2? What is the square root of 36?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry computer went crazy :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

yes... so perfect square formula is in the form of (x+y)(x-y). Try y = 6 expand it out with foil and see what happens

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mind teaching me foil? everyone uses it, but I wasn't taught :(

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

you mean first outer inner last? |dw:1422592997438:dw| I use a number code to remember so for first which is 1 and 3 you multiply the 2 together....and then do the same for the rest.. sorry I don't feel well
