Mass is used most often because its magnitude doesn't change no matter where in the universe it is. Weight is the force of gravity acting on a mass. Consequently, it depends wholly on where the mass is located. Even on Earth, the weight of an object changes from place to place. An object has a different weight at the equator than it does at the north pole, at sea level or at the summit of Mount Everest, etc.
