How was the issue over California’s admission to the Union resolved? President Millard Fillmore, who opposed compromise, died. President Zachary Taylor, who opposed compromise, died. Senator William Seward of the North changed his position. Senator John C. Calhoun of the South changed his position.
The territory was so large that it extended a long way on either side of the Missouri line, rendering the Missouri Compromise inoperable.<br /><br />To get California admitted as free soil, Congress had to offer inducements to the South, including the Fugitive Slave Act, whereby official slave-catchers could hunt down runaways. This proved highly emotive, and galvanised the Abolitionist movement in the North.
