OpenStudy (slickster256):

y would you put letters in math ?

OpenStudy (slickster256):

What is the value of the expression shown below? 3 over 6 to the power of 2 + 7 × 4 − 5 6 and 1 over 4 6 and 1 over 2 23 and 1 over 4 23 and 1 over 2

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

I see only numbers in your expression, what letters are you talking about ?

OpenStudy (slickster256):

srry theres another question i had and i just did this one first

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Ahh okay... \[\large \left(\dfrac{3}{6}\right)^2 + 7\times 4-5\] like this ?

OpenStudy (slickster256):

yes just like tht

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

first simplify the stuff inside parenthesis 3/6 = ?

OpenStudy (slickster256):

ik if i bring the first part in to decimal its .5 bc its a half of a whole number but then i get confused

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Maybe lets not simplify all the way to decimals because the options don't have decimals \[\large \left(\dfrac{3}{6}\right)^2 + 7\times 4-5\] \[\large \left(\dfrac{1}{2}\right)^2 + 7\times 4-5\] \[\large \dfrac{1}{4} + 7\times 4-5\]

OpenStudy (slickster256):

ok

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

forget about 1/4 for the time being and work the remaining part

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

\[\large \dfrac{1}{4} + \color{Red}{7\times 4-5}\]

OpenStudy (slickster256):

so 7 times 4 is 28

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Yep

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

\[\large \dfrac{1}{4} + \color{Red}{28-5}\]

OpenStudy (slickster256):

then its 28 1/4 -5

OpenStudy (slickster256):

which is 23 1/4

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

thats right!

OpenStudy (slickster256):

ok can you help me with one more

OpenStudy (slickster256):

10xy + 9x2y + 8x + 7?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

what are you trying to do here ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

I see letters `x` and `y` in that expression.. but im not sure what the question wants us to do
