OpenStudy (baconbits):

Emerson and Thoreau were good friends, and Thoreau drew a great deal of inspiration from Emerson's teachings and his works. Both were part of the Transcendentalist movement of the mid-1800s. Both believed in the value of individuality, self-reliance, and freedom. They believed that individuals are inherently good, and that organized institutions (society, government, organized religions, etc.) corrupt that goodness inside each of us. That being said, you can immediately take away A and B. Individuality was important to both of them. D is incorrect. If is could be said that either author connects individuality to wealth/frugality, it would be Thoreau, nut Emerson. Emerson laid out the ideas of self-reliance and anti-materialism, but he lived a comfortable life. Thoreau, on the other hand, left behind his possessions to live simply at Walden Lake. C is correct.
