Article One: The New York Tribune from December 5, 1859 On leaving the Jail, John Brown had on his face an expression of calmness and serenity characteristic of the patriot who is about to die with a living consciousness that he is laying his life down for the good of his fellow creatures.... As he stepped out of the door a black woman, with her little child in her arms, stood near his way. The twain were of the despised race for whose emancipation and elevation to the dignity of children of God he was about to lay down his life.... He stopped for a moment in his course, stooped over, and with the tenderness of one whose love is as broad as the brotherhood of man, kissed [the child] affectionately.

Article Two: The Cincinnati Enquirer from December 3, 1859 We rejoice that old BROWN has been hung. He was not only a murderer of innocent persons, but he attempted one of the greatest crimes against society - the stirring up of a servile and civil war. He has paid the penalty for his crimes, and we hope his fate may be a warning to all who might have felt inclined to imitate his aggressive conduct.

Article One: The New York Tribune from December 5, 1859 As John Brown left the Jail, his face showed an expression with the characteristic of patriot. Knowing that his end is near, he kept in mind that he was dying for a good cause; that cause was for his people. On his way out the door, a black woman stood adjacent to him, cradling a child in her arms. These two were of a race that was looked down upon for whose emancipation and elevation to the dignity of children of God he was about to sacrifice his life for.... He hesitated for a moment in his course, leaned forward, and with the tenderness of one whose love is as broad as the brotherhood of man, kissed [the child] affectionately. Article Two: The Cincinnati Enquirer from December 3, 1859 We celebrate that old BROWN has been lynched. He was not only a murderer of innocent persons, but he attempted one of the greatest crimes against society - the stirring up of a servile and civil war. He has paid the consequence for his crimes, and we hope his fate may be a warning to all who might have felt inclined to reciprocate his aggressive behavior.
