Which of the following is an example of pure research? Determining the causes of dementia in elderly people. Creating robots to walk on the surface of Mars. Colliding subatomic particles at high speeds to see what they form. Working with alloys to determine the lightest carbon fiber composition for armor.

OpenStudy (blurbendy):

according to wikipedia: Basic research (also called pure research or fundamental research) is a systematic study directed toward greater knowledge or understanding of the fundamental aspects of phenomena.[1] Basic research is executed without thought of a practical end goal, without specific applications or products in mind.[

OpenStudy (blurbendy):

Based on this, what do you think it is?

OpenStudy (blurbendy):

@sofiasinn ??

ummm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A?

OpenStudy (blurbendy):

no, that research has a specific goal in mind. pure research does not have a specific goal in mind

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay then B because theres not a goal, just to walk the robots on mars?

OpenStudy (blurbendy):

no, because the goal is to create robots to walk on mars. they are creating the robots for a specific goal. try again =)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is so confusing!!! lol

OpenStudy (blurbendy):

i know, lol. look at C though. Is there a specific goal in mind?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well they're trying to see what it forms, isn't that a goal? or no?

OpenStudy (blurbendy):

nope. they just want to see what forms. they dont care exactly what forms, just to experiment and see what happens. that's why it's called pure research.

OpenStudy (blurbendy):

the other options all have some end goal in mind, but C does not. hope that makes sense

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, thank u

OpenStudy (blurbendy):

np. anytime
