The only thing I can tell you is if you turn on a light, (like a new star), you won't see the star until the light from the star reaches you. Light travels at 186000 miles a second. If you are 186000 miles away from the star, you will see the star in 1 second. (Hope this helps, and next time, put this in the Science place... Thanks)

Usually stars and planets are very far from earth, and a light year is a very big type of measurement, which is perfect. Light is the fastest thing on the planet, and measuring how fast it is in a year is unbelievably big.
