The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot (excerpt) "Never mind, make haste!" said Maggie, giving a little stamp with her foot. Her cheeks were quite flushed. The black locks were so thick, nothing could be more tempting to a lad who had already tasted the forbidden pleasure of cutting the pony's mane. I speak to those who know the satisfaction of making a pair of scissors meet through a duly resisting mass of hair. One delicious grinding snip, and then another and another, and the hinder-locks fell heavily on the floor, and Maggie stood cropped in a jagged, uneven manner, but with a sense

of clearness and freedom, as if she had emerged from a wood into the open plain. "Oh, Maggie," said Tom, jumping round her, and slapping his knees as he laughed, "Oh, my buttons! what a queer thing you look! Look at yourself in the glass; you look like the idiot we throw out nutshells to at school."

Suppose you are writing a dramatic interpretation of this scene from a novel, but you want to set it in modern times. Which line would best replace this line from the passage? Oh, my buttons! what a queer thing you look! Goodness, that's awful. Oh boy! I can't believe how you look. OMG! Your hair looks crazy. You're a mess!

Out of these options, I would definitely say the last one. The first two are still quite old-sounding, and the third one couldn't be the answer because OMG is not proper novel literature.

What story element in this passage would be important to bring out in an interpretive presentation? Tom finds Maggie's hair to be thick and beautiful. Tom laughs at Maggie's haircut. Maggie’s hair gets cut off. Maggie is impatient to cut her hair.

I believe the third choice, because the first one is not very important information, and the second and last one DEPEND on the third one happening.
