What type of line is the graph of 4x + y = -3? Vertical Horizontal Rising Falling

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How can you tell if a line is vertical or horizontal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Form looking at an equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would it be vertical?

OpenStudy (godlovesme):

Hey there welcome to OS :))

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OS is Open Study

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can someone help me answer this question please

OpenStudy (phi):

change it to "slope-intercept" form by adding -4x to both sides: 4x-4x +y = -4x + -3 the 4x-4x on the left side is 0, so you get y= -4x -3 the slope is -4. any idea which way a line goes with negative slope?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would it be a falling slope? I just made what I think is the graph for that problem and i didnt get a horizontal or vertical line, i got a falling line, i think.

OpenStudy (phi):

yes. negative slope means the line goes down to the right. slope = 0 would be horizontal *no slope* e.g. x= 4 (which looks different for y= mx +b) is vertical
