Did the colonists have a choice to declare war with Britain?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes. they wanted to be independent from Britain, therefore rebelling and going to war.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well I mean yes ultimately they did because Britian did not actually start the war they had it started against them because of rising aggression towards the British government.

Thanks

But why did the colonists start the war?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Because Thomas Paine, in his common sense argued that this is the only way to get their "inalienable rights" (liberty, land, ....)

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

"common sense" in quoations, it is his work (sorry my err)

The colonists started a war for many reasons. Unfair taxation, no representation in English government and impoverished living standards compared to how lavishly their English counterparts were living. As it pertains to your last question, The colonists did have a choice to declare war with Britain. Before war began, there was a growing rift between a group known as "Patriots" and a group known as "Loyalists." Patriots wanted the current American colonies to grow more and more independent of the English crown while loyalists were loyal to the English crown and wanted to remain under English control. These groups would continue to clash up until the beginning of the revolutionary war. Hope this helped :D
