OpenStudy (brucebaner):

In 1832, the United States Supreme Court ruled in Worcester v. Georgia that the state of Georgia had no right to force the Cherokee from their native lands. Why did this ruling have little positive effect? Georgia had no interest in Cherokee lands. President Jackson did not enforce the ruling. The Cherokee nation chose to move to Canada. The Trail of Tears had already occurred.

@jagr2713

jagr2713 (jagr2713):

What do you think it is

jagr2713 (jagr2713):

the Court held that Georgia had no right to pass laws regarding use of Native American land, and ordered the Governor to release missionaries (Worcester, et al.) imprisoned for violating a state law passed in 1828 requiring whites to purchase a permit in order to live on Cherokee land. Georgia complied with the Supreme Court decision, but only because President Jackson applied pressure on Georgia's Governor to pardon the missionaries.
