Wilfred Owen was a British soldier and poet who fought and died in World War 1. He wrote the poem, "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori", which defines what war was like, and what he went through. Wilfred Owen’s language through this poem carries feelings of fear, shock and rage. He watched people die. His fellow soldiers "went lame" and "became drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots / of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind." He describes seeing men who looks "like a devil's sick of sin" and hearing "the blood / Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs" from suffering the aftereffects of gas used by the enemy. In his poem he uses many similes to define his horrifying experience and what he and all the others went through, such as “bent double like old beggars under sacks,” “knock-kneed, coughing like hags,” “flound'ring like a man in fire or lime," "as under a green sea, I saw him drowning" and "obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud." He also uses intense, dark and terrifying imagery to take his fear and terror at what he sees, hears and experiences, such as "vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues" and "Many had lost their boots / but limped on, blood-shod."
