Could someone help me find the minima and maxima of three polynomials? (Medal and fan!) 1. 0.5x^4 - 4x^2 + 4 2. x^3 - 1.5x^2 - 6x + 1 3. 0.75x^4 + x^3 - 3x^2 + 4
is this algebra ? we can do it
the first one has no max, since it is a parabola that opens up
do you get to use calculus?
i dont think so
damn i am not sure how to do it without calc, thought i could but i could not do you get to use technology? finding the minimum is a calculus problem
the calc way is to take the derivative and find the critical points, but if you are not in calc class then i guess you cannot take the derivative
we get to use a graphing calculator at school but im home and i dont have one here
lol
you are on a computer right?
yes
here i just did the first one in two second by copying and pasting what you wrote in to wolframalfpha http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=0.5x^4+-+4x^2+%2B+4
on a computer you have unlimited graphing calculators i happen to like that one because besides the graph, it actually tells you what the minimum is
scroll down you see the minimum is \(-4\) at \(x=2\) and \(x=-2\)
thanks :)
