Which sentence uses a verb that agrees with its subject? A. The new volunteers at the fire station are waiting for their first call. B. Four players on the team is out because of injuries. C. In the afternoon, the traffic on the highways grow. D. The leaves on our tree is not green any more.
A sentence that has a verb that agrees with its subject will have a plural subject with a plural verb, and a singular subject with a singular verb. A singular verb will have an 's' on the end of it (generally), but a plural verb will not (also generally). Also, a singular noun will NOT have an 's' on the end (generally), but a plural noun will. Some examples of these pairs are: Plural: We are You guys eat Jim and Sally grow Singular: Mary is Steve grows Kate cleans So, in your sentences, the verb and noun pairs are: A. volunteers are B. players is C. traffic grow D. leaves is In a, the plural noun, volunteers, is paired with a plural verb, are. So, this pair agrees, and therefore the correct answer is sentence choice A.

So as spudmushie123 said, a general rule is singular subjects have verbs with 's' and plural subjects have verbs without 's'.
