Proportions A proportion is an equation that states that two ratios are equal. In order to determine whether two ratios form a proportion, you need to determine whether the two ratios are equal. One way to test whether two ratios are equal is to write each ratio in simplest form. If the ratios written in simplest form are equal, then the ratios are equal. Look at the problem from the Getting Started page. Natalia and Daniel are in different Spanish classes. Last week, Natalia got 20 out of 25 questions correct on her Spanish test. Daniel got 24 out of 30 correct on his Spanish test For each student, write the ratio of the number of correct answers to the number of questions on the test. Then write the ratios in simplest form by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor (GCF). Natalia: reduced 20 over 25 Daniel: reduced 24 over 30 Because both ratios are equal to four over five, you know that the ratios form a proportion and that Natalia and Daniel scored equally well on their tests. To write the proportion, write a number sentence using the two original ratios. 20 over 25 equals 24 over 30
